Win to Nil Bets Explained: Victory Plus a Clean Sheet

A win to nil bet pays out only if the team you back wins the match and keeps the opponents from scoring. A 1–0 or a 4–0 is a winner. A 3–1 is a loser, even though your team won comfortably, and so is a 0–0 draw.

The market rewards a particular kind of match: one side clearly stronger in attack and solid at the back. That double condition is also why it pays more than a plain win bet on the same team.

How bookmakers list the selections

Bookmakers usually list two selections per match, one for each side: "Home to win to nil" and "Away to win to nil". Some present it as a Yes/No question for each team. Either way, you are betting on a narrower version of a 1 or a 2 in the 1X2 result market, with a clean-sheet clause added on top.

Because both conditions must hold, the bet can be lost in two separate ways: your team fails to win, or the opponents score at any point. A late consolation goal in a match that was already decided is enough to sink the ticket.

Win to nil compared with similar markets

Several football markets look at goals conceded. They overlap, but each draws the line in a different place.

Reading the table from left to right, each market covers more scorelines than the one before it, which is why prices usually shorten in that order. Win to nil is the strictest of the three.

How settlement normally works

Check your bookmaker's rules for the specific market, but these conventions are widespread:

  • Regular time only. Extra time and penalty shoot-outs do not count. A team that wins 1–0 in extra time after a goalless 90 minutes has not won to nil for betting purposes.
  • Own goals count. If a defender from your team turns the ball into his own net, that goal is credited to the opponents and the clean sheet is gone.
  • Disallowed goals do not count. Only goals that stand on the official result matter.
  • Unfinished matches follow the bookmaker's general rules on postponement and abandonment, explained in our piece on void bets.

Reading the price sensibly

Any price can be turned into an implied chance by dividing one by the decimal odds. A made-up price of 2.50 implies about a 40% chance, before the bookmaker's margin is taken into account. That does not mean the bookmaker is right, and it certainly does not mean the outcome is likely; it means the market rates it somewhat less often than not.

Prices move sharply during a match. A red card, an injury to a key defender or an early goal can change the picture within minutes. The article on live scores in arbitrage and value betting explains why in-play prices react so quickly to match events.

The appeal and the catch

The appeal is easy to see: backing a strong favourite at a better price than the plain win market. The catch is that strong favourites concede more often than fans remember, especially when they rotate players or ease off after taking a lead. A single set piece late in the game is all it takes.

Common mistakes

  1. Judging defence on reputation alone. Last season's clean-sheet record says little about this week's line-up.
  2. Forgetting the 0–0. A goalless draw feels like a near miss for a clean-sheet bet, but for win to nil it is a plain loss.
  3. Combining several win-to-nil picks. Each leg already carries two conditions; stacking them multiplies the difficulty quickly.
  4. Raising the stake because the favourite feels "safe". No football result is safe enough to bet money you need.

Questions readers ask

Is win to nil the same as a clean sheet bet?

No. A clean sheet bet only needs your team not to concede, so a 0–0 draw wins. Win to nil also needs a victory.

Can I combine win to nil with a goalscorer pick?

Some bookmakers allow it through bet builders or specials. Combined bets add more conditions and more margin; the goalscorer side is covered in first and anytime goalscorer bets explained.

Over-18s only. Before placing anything, look up whether sports betting is lawful in your region, and treat each stake as the price of a match-day hobby rather than a way to earn.
