Cookies Explained Simply

Cookie pages are often long and confusing. Ours can stay brief, since this site keeps almost nothing.

What a cookie is

A cookie is a small text file a website can place in your browser to remember something about your visit. Similar technologies, such as local storage, do much the same job. Some are useful, like remembering a language setting; others follow you around the web to build an advertising profile.

What this site stores

Some Distant Galaxy stores exactly one thing: your answer to the cookie notice. When you choose to accept or decline, that choice is written to your browser's local storage so the notice does not greet you on every page. The entry:

  • stays on your own device;
  • is not sent to us or to anyone else;
  • contains no name, email address or other personal detail;
  • is not used to recognise you on other websites.

Trackers we left on the launch pad

We do not set analytics cookies, advertising cookies, social media cookies or any other tracking technology. There are no third-party scripts watching how you scroll, click or read. Declining the notice changes nothing about what you can see; every article remains fully readable either way.

Changing your mind

To reset your choice, clear the site data for this website in your browser settings. Most browsers list this under privacy or site settings, where you can remove stored data for a single site. On your next visit the notice returns and you can make a fresh choice.

You can also block cookies and local storage altogether in your browser. The site will still work, although the notice may reappear each time because there is nowhere to remember your answer.

Hosting and security

Our hosting provider may need to process technical information, such as IP addresses, in order to deliver pages and protect the service from abuse. That processing happens on the server side and does not involve cookies set by us. The details are covered on Privacy in Orbit.
