What Is a Half-Time/Full-Time Bet?

Most football bets ask a single question: who wins? The half-time/full-time market, often shortened to HT/FT, asks two. You predict the state of the match at the interval and the result at the final whistle, and both parts must be right for the bet to win. It is a popular market in Europe and across Southeast Asia, partly because the prices look generous and partly because it rewards a feel for how particular teams start and finish games.
The nine possible outcomes
At half-time a match can be a home lead, a draw or an away lead. The same three options exist at full-time. Combine them and you get nine selections, usually written with a slash between the two halves.
| Selection | At half-time | At full-time |
|---|---|---|
| Home/Home | Home team leads | Home team wins |
| Home/Draw | Home team leads | Match drawn |
| Home/Away | Home team leads | Away team wins |
| Draw/Home | Level | Home team wins |
| Draw/Draw | Level | Match drawn |
| Draw/Away | Level | Away team wins |
| Away/Home | Away team leads | Home team wins |
| Away/Draw | Away team leads | Match drawn |
| Away/Away | Away team leads | Away team wins |
Only one of the nine can be correct in any match. The two "turnaround" selections, Home/Away and Away/Home, describe a side coming from behind to win, which is the rarest kind of story in most matches and is priced accordingly.
How the bet is settled
Bookmakers set their own rules, so read the market terms, but a few conventions are common:
- Regular time only. Full-time normally means the end of the second half including stoppage time. Extra time and penalty shoot-outs usually do not count.
- The half-time score is taken at the whistle, including any first-half stoppage time.
- Abandoned or postponed matches are handled under the bookmaker's general rules, which may void the bet or settle it on a later fixture.
- Both legs must be right. A correct full-time call with a wrong half-time call is a losing bet.
Why the prices look so attractive
HT/FT prices are higher than straight win prices because you are predicting more. Picking a winner is one question; picking a winner and what the scoreboard said at the interval is a narrower target. A team you expect to win comfortably can still be level at the break, and a single early or late goal can flip the half-time part on its own.
It helps to read any price as an implied chance. A hypothetical decimal price of 5.00 implies the bookmaker rates the outcome at about one in five, before its margin is taken into account. Across nine selections that margin adds up, which is one reason combination markets tend to cost bettors more over time than simpler ones.
Draw/Draw and other quiet outcomes
Some bettors are drawn to Draw/Draw in tight, cautious fixtures. Others like Draw/Home for a strong side that tends to start slowly. These are reasonable ways to think about a match, but no pattern of past results makes the next game predictable. Team news, red cards, weather and plain luck can change a half in minutes.
A few practical habits
- Stake less than you would on a match winner. More ways to lose deserve a smaller amount at risk.
- Avoid stacking HT/FT picks into accumulators. Each extra leg multiplies the difficulty as well as the price.
- Check the settlement rules for cup ties, where extra time is likely.
- Keep a simple record of what you staked and why, so the market stays a hobby rather than a habit.
